Are you passionate about animals and keen to explore a career in animal care? Our T Level Foundation Programme in Animal Care is the perfect starting point for you. This programme offers a comprehensive introduction to the animal care industry, blending hands-on experience with essential theoretical knowledge. You'll have the chance to work closely with a diverse range of species, from domestic pets to exotic animals. Our state-of-the-art facilities and expert instructors ensure you gain practical skills in handling, feeding, grooming, and maintaining the health and welfare of animals.

The curriculum covers a broad spectrum of topics, including animal behaviour, nutrition, anatomy, and welfare legislation. You’ll also learn about the ethical considerations and best practices in the industry, preparing you for a variety of roles such as veterinary assistant, animal care technician, or zoo keeper.

You will need 4 GCSE's at grade 3-9 including English and Science. Or a relevant Level 1 qualification.

16-18 Free You will need to provide your own stationery and you will be given the opportunity to take part in trips and visits.

Your progress will be assessed periodically through assignments, verbal and practical assessments, and summarized at the end of the course through examinations and a synoptic assignment. Assessments are varied to allow all of your skills to be utilised.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.

You will have the opportunity to take part in 150 hours of placement in the animal care industry as part of the course.

Students may complete 120 hours of industrial experience in the college zoo. This will be embedded into the timetable.

The remaining 30 hours must be completed in an external placement. Health and safety checks will be completed via the college and support from the skills coaches will be available.

Our T Level Foundation Programme in Animal Care boasts strong industry links to enhance your learning experience. We partner with renowned organisations like Pets Corner in Jesmond Dene, providing you with invaluable practical experience and insights. These connections ensure you acquire the skills and knowledge essential for a successful career in the animal care industry, positioning you ahead in this rewarding field.

The aim of this course is to develop your skills and knowledge in animal care, preparing you for further education or a career in the animal care industry. You'll gain essential theoretical understanding and practical skills, ensuring you are well-equipped for roles such as veterinary assistant, animal care technician, or zoo keeper. This qualification provides a strong foundation for your future in animal care.

You will study exciting units including animal husbandry, animal health and welfare, zoo animals, wildlife, animal training and work experience along with other modules and additional side qualifications. Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens offers the opportunity to gain practical experience with a wide variety of animals including all five taxa groups such as birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

What’s next?

Upon completing this course, you can progress to the T Level in Animal Care & Management or pursue other related qualifications.
Alternatively, step directly into the animal care industry, with roles such as veterinary assistant, animal care technician, or zoo keeper awaiting you. This programme equips you with the skills and knowledge to excel in a variety of fulfilling careers dedicated to animal welfare.
