What’s it all about?

This course is suitable for a range of individuals working in diverse roles across the children’s workforce, for example in schools, nurseries, youth/play work, residential care, health and social environments, specialist or alternative provision, inclusion/behavioural/SEN support teams and family support. Please note: this is not an exhaustive list and applications are encouraged from any individual working with children and/or young people and/or families where the child is aged between birth and 18 years. Applicants may already be employed in the sector or could opt to engage in an appropriate voluntary placement of 70 hours.

You should hold a relevant level 5 qualification in a related subject.

19+ please enquire You will need to provide your own stationery and may choose to purchase some pertinent books/journal subscriptions to support your study to supplement the resources accessible via the College systems. Access to IT facilities and internet connection to support your study is essential.

Your competence will be assessed using a diverse range of methods. You will be expected to submit formal written responses and will also be supported to engage in presentations, research projects, individual and group activities and case studies.

If you are not currently employed within the childcare sector, you will be expected to engage in voluntary placement of a minimum of 70 hours across the year. This is a minimum requirement and it is further recognised that increased work-based experience, if possible, will further enhance your professional practice, knowledge and understanding and will also raise your employability.

Effective relationships are maintained with a wide range of professional agencies across the county to support currency and networking.

The programme runs over one year and is delivered on one evening per week and there will be an additional six fully supported writing workshops which operate on a Saturday across the year.

The course aims to enable you to develop your professional skills and knowledge in your chosen discipline encompassing a diverse range of professional contexts.

What’s next?

Once you have completed the programme you could apply to progress onto diverse post-graduate level study programmes at any university/HE provider i.e. to fast-track social work training or to the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) teacher training programme. We provide a PGCE programme for those interested in teaching in the life long learning sector and this is validated by Huddersfield University. You should check entry requirements for different institutions as these vary.

You could also progress in your career by applying for higher level/ management posts within the children’s workforce appropriate to your level of qualification and experience. Such roles may include specialist roles within schools (inclusion/behaviour/additional needs co-ordinator), or you may opt for more senior roles within your current discipline.
