If you are passionate about animals and would like an introduction into a career within the veterinary industry, this is the course for you!
Access to this course requires that you have attained a standard of general education and competence, sufficient enough to benefit and succeed on the course.
Assessment of suitability is likely to be based on GCSE grades or equivalent.
Mature students will be considered independent of previous qualification, although progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing requires a minimum or equivalent to grade 4-9 in Maths and English.

Teaching will take place within the Veterinary Nursing department, by registered veterinary nurses and you will be taught using a range of teaching techniques including a hands-on, practical approach wherever possible.
Our Veterinary Nursing department at Kirkley Hall Campus has an outstanding range of equipment, designed to replicate a veterinary environment as well as classrooms to support theory.
Your progress will be assessed at the end of each unit and will include short-answer questions and observations, as well as one on-line multiple-choice exam. Assessments will be varied to allow all your skills to be utilised.
This is an additional qualification to the Level 2 for Animal Nursing Assistants and will be embedded into the timetable.
English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career.
If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Maths and/ or English at school, we will support you to improve your skills.
As part of the course, students will need to secure 60 hours in placement, ideally in a small animal/mixed veterinary practice – this can be voluntary (unpaid).
Health and safety checks will be completed via the college and support from the skills coaches will be available.
The veterinary practice does not need to be an RCVS Training Practice.
This ensures you gain outstanding learning experience with us and are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in the veterinary industry.
You will also be given the opportunity to attend 3 hours per week in the college zoo, this will be embedded into the timetable.

This Level 2 Certificate for Animal Nursing Assistants is offered as a part-time course (one day per week) for adults looking to pursue a career in the veterinary industry or those currently working in practice who wish to expand their knowledge and practical skills.
Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:
How to deliver basic treatments to animals, including cleaning and hygiene procedures, basic health care treatments, and other routine procedures
How to maintain animal accommodation, including providing feed and water to animals
The principles of infection control
Introduction to animal anatomy and physiology
Optional units include Handling and restraint of animals; Provide opportunities for animals to exercise; Companion animal parasitology and zoonosis.

The qualification is held in high regard in veterinary practices. It develops practical skills in animal care and management, while offering additional opportunities to hone customer service skills in a retail environment.
The skills and knowledge you develop will enhance your employability as an Animal Nursing Assistant or Veterinary Care Assistant.
This qualification can also be used to support your application for enrolment onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
This progression route is dependent upon employment in veterinary practice.
