What’s it all about?

This course is for adults (19+) wishing to work in the education sector and is suitable for teaching assistants, learning support assistants, cover supervisors, parent support advisors or those in similar roles at level 3 in the school environment. You will gain a secure understanding of the behaviours, knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in school environments.

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods which could include: direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence or written assignments. Regular formative assessment and feedback supports progress and development throughout the course.

Maths and English GCSE's are not an entry requirement, however, a good standard of written and verbal communication and academic ability is essential at level 3.

You will need to be working or on a practical placement in an education setting with children and young people aged 5 to 19 years to show competence in both knowledge and skills. It is recommended a placement is attended a minimum of 1 day per week.

Thursday evening between 5pm-8pm.

Sessions will be a mix of class taught, one to one support, and tutorial and independent study - you will receive a session overview at induction.

The Level 3 qualification is a one year part-time adult programme. There is an expectation that along with a placement to show occupational competence, you will spend time at home researching and completing assignments.

This qualification provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special educational needs schools.

The course will qualify you to work as a Level 3 teaching and learning support assistant in schools and education settings.

There are a range of units that blend a range of knowledge and skills to cover key aspects of working in an education setting.

A range of assessment methods will also be used including observation of practice in your setting.

What’s next?

On successful completion of the course, you could progress directly into employment as a teaching or learning support assistant and/or into Higher Education.

We offer the Level 4 Higher Education Certificate/Level 5 Foundation Degree in Working with Children and Families.

You could also progress to Higher Education and complete a PGCE qualification to gain employment in teaching.
