Nathan’s apprenticeship gave him the confidence and skills to start his own business, Bright Green Gardens, based in Gosforth.
Horticulture.
I was able to develop new skills but also earn at the same time as learning – I think I learn best when I’m doing something practical. With gardening I get to do something different every day and I’ve enjoyed meeting customers.
I’d previously studied horticulture but felt ready to move into employment. The apprenticeship gave me the chance to get a job but keep learning.
All of the tutors are gardeners themselves and obviously love what they do, so it was great to be able to share their enthusiasm and learn so much about the industry from them.
It’s really friendly and all of the team in the horticulture department make you feel welcome right from the start. They’re also really approachable and their support has been great as we’ve progressed through our final assessments.
Definitely. It’s a great way to get into the workplace, gain confidence and keep learning skills that will set you up for the rest of your life.
Doing the apprenticeship has given me the confidence to start my own gardening business; understanding how to find customers, talk to them about what they need from me, accurately estimate the time it will take to complete different jobs and be confident that I have the skills to do a good job for my customers.
