Our Arboriculture students have recently worked on a project in conjunction with Gentoo on Tree Tagging.
Tree Tagging is part of the surveying programme Gentoo deliver to individually tag trees with unique colour codes to support with inspections on their land.
This proactive approach shows a duty of care in relation to health and safety for tree conservation and management, which are key modules as part of our Arboriculture courses.
Tree Survey Specialist at Gentoo, Andrew Barr, said: “To help us inspect such a large stock of trees within Gentoo’s land ownership boundaries, we have had the opportunity to partner up with Northumberland College.
“We now have Patrick Smith and his Arboriculture students tagging and inspecting trees for us in the central area of Sunderland. This is enabling Gentoo to inspect their stock of trees faster and more efficiently. The information is then fed back to myself and the Gentoo’s Arboriculture Department to process the information and to carry out any necessary work on the trees.”
Talking about this recent collaboration, Arboriculture Lecturer Patrick Smith, said: “It’s great to partner up with a large business that directly gives our students hands on and practical experiences.
“Our students have thoroughly enjoyed assisting Gentoo and have carried out tasks to a high quality and in a professional way.”
