Northumberland College Equine Groom Apprenticeship alumni Ismail Gany, has been named as a finalist for Land-Based and Environment Learner Awards 2023 within the Equine and Farriery category.
Ismail, who studied the Racing Pathway Apprenticeship, came runner up which rounds off a successful few years in which he has also gone on to secure employment as a rider at one of the top racing yards in the UK – Easterby Racing in Yorkshire – and is in training to become a professional jockey.
The awards were launched by leading land-based training & qualification awarding body Lantra, and the representative body for land-based colleges and universities, Landex, which last month celebrated land-based and environmental education and recognised the future talent of the sector. The ceremony included an exclusive VIP pre-reception, a celebratory three-course meal and presentation of the prizes.
The Awards covered a wide range of land-based and environmental sectors and highlighted the importance of this sector nationally, as well as recognising the breadth of talent that is key to its future.
Land-based employers, colleges, private training providers and universities are encouraged to recognise and promote their top candidates working in the sector by nominating them for a prestigious award.
Equine Trainer/Assessor Aimee Newlands at Northumberland College said: “It was a fantastic evening with so many inspiring stories and ambitious young people.
“Ismail was the only northern college apprentice to make it to the final, and industry experts and sponsors were very impressed by Ismail and his journey.”
120 nominees were put forward for these prestigious Awards from England and Northern Ireland and finalists were recognised for their outstanding achievements, following a rigorous judging process conducted by industry and sector experts.
