A group students studying Animal Management at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall Campus have just returned from Italy where they have been learning about the marine environment and why it is important to protect it for a sustainable future.
On the trip the students took part in a variety of activities including surveying dolphins, turtle rescues and rehabilitation, water quality sampling and beach cleans, as well as attending various conservation themed seminars.
Student Emma Rogge who is studying the BSc Degree in Animal Management said:
“Our Marine Conservation trip to Italy was an experience I will never forget. The hands on work and up close encounters with such a variety of marine species gave me a varied and vast insight into the work of marine biologists and conservationists.
“Learning in the class room is one thing, but joining this passionate and dedicated team aboard the research vessel helped me to realise my own passions for conservation, and this I will carry into my future career in this field.”
On the trip which was organised in partnership with Flooglebinder and the Jonian Dolphin Conservation team, students visited Naples, Pompeii and Sorrento with some free time for snorkelling, site seeing and to enjoy the delicious local cuisine.
Lauren Lawson, Animal Management Lecturer at Northumberland College, said:
“We give students the opportunity to take part in trips such as this one as it gives them real industry experience which goes towards their course and is invaluable for their CVs and future career paths.
“As well as the practical hands-on experience gained the students attended several seminars with an emphasis on sustainability. The speakers were all conservation experts and were extremely inspiring which has motivated the students to explore conservation, as it is such an interesting and rewarding field.”
