You’ll gain hands-on experience in maintaining grooming equipment and mastering the techniques of safely handling and restraining animals.
Taught by experienced professionals at our well-equipped Kirkley Hall Campus, this course doesn’t require any prior qualifications to start. Upon completion, you’ll be ready to advance to higher-level qualifications or begin a fulfilling career helping pets look and feel their best. This course is your stepping stone to a rewarding career in a thriving industry, providing both practical skills and creative satisfaction.

Achieving a grade 4 (A-C) or above in GCSE Maths and English is crucial for your future success, opening doors to further education, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities. These core subjects are the foundation of many careers, and most employers and colleges require them. If you didn't achieve the grades you need, don't worry our college offers dedicated GCSE Maths and English courses designed to help you succeed. With our expert tutors and supportive learning environment, you'll have the tools you need to improve your grades and unlock your full potential.
Some learners opt to undertake work experience alongside their course, but this is not required, your course will provide hands-on experience and client-work.
The Level 2 Dog Grooming programme offers flexible study options to suit your schedule. You can complete the course over 36 weeks with a commitment of 3 hours per week, or, if you prefer a faster pace, you can finish in just 18 weeks by dedicating 6 hours per week. This flexibility allows you to tailor your learning experience around other commitments, ensuring you gain the essential skills and knowledge to advance in the dog grooming industry.
The course typically starts in September and January each year. However, there may be additional intake dates throughout the year depending on demand. Depending on the level and whether you choose to study full-, or part-time, there are differing schedules for delivery. The schedules are generally very flexible and the team will work with students to find times that work for you.
You will learn advanced grooming techniques, breed-specific grooming, handling various dog temperaments, and animal health and welfare. You will also cover customer service and the business aspects of running your own grooming service.
Students will complete units such as: basic trim of a dog, bathing and cleaning dogs, cleaning and maintaining equipment used for grooming or removing hair from animals, controlling and restraining animals, drying dogs and preparing their coats for stylin.
Our courses includes extensive practical hands-on experience in the college’s dog grooming salon, working with real dogs of different breeds and temperaments.
Students are provided with industry standard tools and equipment during their studies. Upon completion of the course, students will receive recommendations for which equipment and tools they should purchase.
You will work in the college’s grooming salon, where real clients from the community bring in their dogs for grooming. This will give you valuable experience in providing professional grooming services.
Our Dog Grooming course is primarily aimed at adult learners. If you are aged 16-18 and interested in a similar field, Northumberland College offers a range of School Leaver Courses in Animal Care and related subjects. Upon successful completion of this programme, students are well-prepared to either advance their studies with our Level 3 programme in dog grooming paving the way for advanced dog grooming techniques and business skills necessary to run a salon or step directly into professional roles. Step directly into roles within pet care retailers, veterinary clinics, or grooming salons, where they can apply their skills and passion for animal welfare in a thriving industry that values dedicated grooming professionals.
