What’s it all about?

This is a 1-year course. The course is designed for those unsure of the route they would like to take within the engineering sector.

You will be introduced to mechanical engineering, machining, mechanical repair, electrical and electronic installation and repair, welding, and motor vehicle maintenance.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Study level Cost Additional fees
16-18 Free Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required for all workshop activities. This can be purchased at enrolment.

The course is taught face-to-face by our industry experienced Engineering team.

Students are assessed over the duration of the course and will produce a portfolio of evidence.

Achieving a Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths and English is important, but if you're not there yet, don’t worry! We provide supportive classes to help you meet these essential criteria. These subjects form the backbone of your educational toolkit, opening doors to further studies and exciting apprenticeships. Our sessions in Maths and English will equip you with the skills needed to thrive academically and professionally.

- Skills competitions: Showcase your abilities in our exciting skills competitions. Held throughout the academic year, these competitions are not just about winning - they are about learning, growing, and pushing your limits. They offer a fun, competitive environment to enhance what you learn in class and develop essential industry skills.

The course runs from September to June.

Students are expected to attend all timetables lessons.

The course consists of 18 hours of teaching with students expected to undertake 3 hours of study outside of lessons.

Students successfully completing the course will gain a Level 1 Award and Certificate in Occupational Studies.

As part of this course, you will study a range of modules, including:

Developing skills in joining materials using welding

Mechanical component assembling skills
- Developing Skills in Routine Servicing of Mechanical Equipment
- Identification of Basic External and Internal Car Parts
- Motor Vehicle Workshop Tools and Equipment
- Problem Solving at Work
- Working in a Team
- Global Skills
- Tutorial

If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 in GCSE Maths and English, you will also study:

- GCES English
- GCSE Maths

What’s next?

This is the first stage in your engineering journey, and students may progress to any engineering programme of study at the next appropriate level.

Students studying engineering may progress to full-time employment within the sector, apprenticeships or Higher Education studies with the college or at university.
