What’s it all about?

The course aims to support adult learners aged over 19 to progress to Higher Education and eventually complete a degree in animal, equine, or wildlife conservation.

You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to cover your course fees. Student Finance England will write off any outstanding Advanced Learner Loan balances you owe for an Access to Higher Education course once you complete a Higher Education qualification. This means you may not be required to repay your loan if you go on to successfully complete a Higher Education course that is eligible for student finance.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, which must include English and ideally Maths. Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths are also accepted.

You will have an excellent experience and benefit from theoretical lessons and some practical sessions within the science units. The aim of this course is to prepare you for university and your future career within animal or equine science/management or wildlife conservation.

There are clear links and examples provided within lessons so that you are able to see how theory comes into practice.

You will be assessed in various ways from essays and reports to posters, leaflets and presentations. This will allow you to explore various software and enjoy our facilities.

On this course you will experience a combination of teaching and learning styles as follows:

- Classroom lectures
- Workshop/study sessions
- Directed work with other students
- Directed private study

During the course, lecturers will assess your knowledge and learning will also ensure that additional support is provided where needed.

English and Maths are important life skills that will help you to achieve your best in your studies and progress to your dream career. If you have not already achieved grade 9-4 in GCSE Englishl, we will support you to improve your skills before you start the Access Diploma course.

If you have not yet achieved your GCSE Maths, you will need to study this at College alongside your Access Diploma course.

The course will be delivered across 8 hours per week, with an additional 3 hours a week attendance for those wishing to study GCSE Maths.

Extra time will be needed for independent study in addition to hours of attendance.

The course aims to support adult learners aged over 19 to progress to Higher Education and complete a degree.

Alternatively, it might be that you would like to refresh your skills within animal or equine science, or gain further academic qualifications to progress your career. This course allows you to gain the UCAS points to help you to gain a university place.

There is support available within the college. You will be work closely with your programme leader to monitor both your academic progress and your personal development.

This course is delivered on campus and is taught face-to-face, where there is a focus on attendance, as this helps you to achieve high grades and the get most out of the course. The induction process will help you to settle into the college, provide you with an overview of the units/course details and understand the expectations.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Veterinary Science and Zoology will aid students to progress into careers within:

- Animal science and management
- Equine Science and management
- Veterinary nursing
- Bio-veterinary science
- Wildlife conservation

The graded units of this course include:

- Biology
- Chemistry
- Maths
- Veterinary
- Microbiology

You will also study a range of ungraded units, which include a range of academic skills and personal development.

What’s next?

On completion of this course, you can progress to a Higher Education course with us, or apply to university to study an animal care, veterinary science or zoology related qualification.

You may progress to study a Foundation Degree with Northumberland College. All of these courses also haveTop Up options, so it is possible to complete a BSc (Hons) degreel.
