Students should have achieved level 2 in mathematics and English prior to undertaking this qualification. A level of competence in digital skills is also required.

Students are not required to have achieved a Level 3 Award in Teaching or a Level 4 Certificate in Teaching before undertaking a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching

A collated portfolio of evidence for the course is internally assessed and externally quality assured. All the evidence generated by the trainee will be assessed against the standards expected at Level 5 for each learning outcome.

Assessment of units is coursework-based, and ten classroom-based observations are carried out across the two years.
Teaching on the course is classroom-based and will focus on aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. During sessions trainees will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

Trainees will be expected to carry out research into professionalism in education and training policies and consider their impact on their role and their accountability as a teacher/trainer. In second year of the programme, you will carry out research into professionalism in education and training policies and consider the impact on your role and your accountability as a teacher/trainer.

You will need to possess reasonable levels of language, literacy and numeracy for entry onto the Level 5 course. it is advisable that you have Level 2 Maths and English or GCSE grade 4/C or commit to maintaining your own development of these skills throughout the course.

The minimum required placement hours are 250 hours. This must include:
• at least 150 hours of teaching practice, of these:
• at least 100 hours must be in the learner’s subject area.
• a minimum of 20 hours of remote synchronous (live) delivery should be included, alongside a minimum of 80 hours face-to-face delivery.

The placement requirement includes a minimum of two locations: The second placement must be for at least 20 hours.

During your placement, you should have a mentor in the workplace who is a qualified teacher/lecturer (i.e. PgCE, Cert. Ed or DTLLs.) and where possible is a subject specialist in the same area.

Delivered on the evening, usually 17:00pm – 20:00pm on a Thursday. *Times and day subject to change*

This qualification time totals 1200 hours with 430 guided learning hours. Students are expected to assign time in their working week to complete assessments set by their course tutor.

This qualification aims to:

• focus on the study of teaching in Further Education.
• offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge.
• provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills.

The objective of this qualification is to:

• confirm occupational competence in a teaching role within the workplace.

What’s next?

Upon completing, you can pursue Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status, enhancing your professional standing in the education sector. This qualification opens doors to teaching roles in further education colleges, adult and community learning centres, and work-based learning environments. Additionally, it provides a pathway to higher education opportunities, such as a Level 6 Diploma in Education and Training or a related degree, further broadening your career prospects.
