This programme balances theoretical knowledge with extensive practical experience, you'll learn everything from animal handling and care in various environments to supporting veterinary professionals in practices.

With our facilities and experienced instructors, you'll be well-equipped to handle the challenges and opportunities of a career in animal care. This qualification not only enhances your understanding and skills but also enriches your compassion and commitment to animal care, making it an ideal choice for aspiring veterinary professionals.

You will need 4 GCSE's at grade 4-9, including Maths and English and some animal husbandry experience.

16-18 Free You will be required to purchase a uniform and PPE when studying this course. Information will be provided at enrolment. You may also be required to pay for any trips and visits, and you will be required to purchase your own stationery. A college bus can be provided with pick-up points at various locations.

Teaching will take place within the Veterinary Nursing department, by registered veterinary nurses and you will be taught using a range of teaching techniques including a hands-on, practical approach wherever possible.

Our Veterinary Nursing department at Kirkley Hall Campus has an outstanding range of equipment, designed to replicate a veterinary environment as well as classrooms to support theory.

Your progress will be assessed at the end of each unit and will include short-answer questions and observations, as well as one on-line multiple-choice exam. Assessments will be varied to allow all your skills to be utilised.

To comply with government guidelines, students under the age of 19 years will also be required to attend Level 2 Dog Grooming.

This is an additional qualification to the Level 2 for Animal Nursing Assistants and will be embedded into the timetable.

As part of the course, students will need to secure 60 hours in placement, ideally in a small animal/mixed veterinary practice – this can be voluntary (unpaid).

Health and safety checks will be completed via the college and support from our Skills Coaches will be available.

The veterinary practice does not need to be an RCVS training practice.

A placement helps to give you an outstanding learning experience and will equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in the veterinary industry.

You will also be given the opportunity to attend up to 3 hours per week in the Northumberland College Zoo, which will be embedded into the timetable.

This Level 2 in Animal Nursing Assistants is aimed at school leavers looking to pursue a career in the veterinary industry or those currently working in practice who wish to expand their knowledge and practical skills.

We offer a full-time course for students aged 16-19 years.

Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:

How to deliver basic treatments to animals, including cleaning and hygiene procedures, basic health care treatments, and other routine procedures

How to maintain animal accommodation, including providing feed and water to animals

The principles of infection control

Introduction to animal anatomy and physiology

Optional units include Handling and restraint of animals; Provide opportunities for animals to exercise; Companion animal parasitology and zoonosis.

What’s next?

Upon completing this course, students are well-positioned to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, opening doors to registered veterinary nurse status. Alternatively, students may step directly into the workforce, finding roles in veterinary practices, animal charities, or wildlife centres. This qualification lays a robust foundation, enhancing both practical skills and employment prospects in the field of animal health care, offering a fulfilling pathway to those dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals.
