You will need a suitable level of general education and competence. Suitability is usually based on GCSE grades or equivalent. Mature students are considered independently of past qualifications. Progression to the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing requires a minimum of grade 4-9 in Maths and English.

Teaching will be delivered by registered veterinary nurses and you will be taught using a range of techniques, with a hands-on, practical approach.
The Veterinary Nursing department at our Kirkley Hall campus has an outstanding range of equipment, designed to replicate a veterinary environment, as well as classrooms to support the teaching of theory.
Your progress will be assessed at the end of each unit and will include short-answer questions and observations, as well as an online multiple-choice exam. Assessments will be varied to allowyou to utilise all your skills.
Achieving a grade 4 (A-C) or above in GCSE Maths and English is crucial for your future success, opening doors to further education, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities. These core subjects are the foundation of many careers, and most employers and colleges require them. If you didn't achieve the grades you need, don't worry our college offers dedicated GCSE Maths and English courses designed to help you succeed. With our expert tutors and supportive learning environment, you'll have the tools you need to improve your grades and unlock your full potential.
As part of the course, students will need to secure 60 hours in placement, ideally in a small animal/mixed veterinary practice – this can be voluntary (unpaid).
Health and safety checks will be completed via the college and support from our Skills Coaches will be available.
The veterinary practice does NOT need to be a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons training practice.
A placement offers you an outstanding learning experience to ensure you are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress to a career in the veterinary industry.

This programme is offered as a part-time course (one day per week) for adults looking to pursue a career in the veterinary industry, or those currently working in practice who wish to expand their knowledge and practical skills.
Learners will complete this qualification with a concrete understanding of the following:
How to deliver basic treatments to animals, including cleaning and hygiene procedures, basic health care treatments, and other routine procedures
How to maintain animal accommodation, including providing feed and water to animals
The principles of infection control
Introduction to animal anatomy and physiology
Optional units include Handling and restraint of animals; Provide opportunities for animals to exercise; Companion animal parasitology and zoonosis.
Upon completing this course, students are well-positioned to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, opening doors to registered veterinary nurse status. Alternatively, students may step directly into the workforce, finding roles in veterinary practices, animal charities, or wildlife centres. This qualification lays a robust foundation, enhancing both practical skills and employment prospects in the field of animal health care, offering a fulfilling pathway to those dedicated to making a difference in the lives of animals.
