The qualification is the formal route for those wishing to qualify as a veterinary nurse. Successful completion of this qualification will enable learners to complete their enrolment with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
This course is available to students who are working in a veterinary training practice, either as an apprentice or an employee.
The programme will provideyou with the practical competence and underpinning knowledge required to join the RCVS as a registered veterinary nurse. It has been designed to develop veterinary nurses that have a holistic approach to their work, a passion for making a difference to the lives of animals, and a solid understanding of their professional responsibilities. It covers the following species:
- Cats
- Dogs
- Rabbits
The student must already be in employment at an approved veterinary training practice as a student veterinary nurse
Learners must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4 ( A*-C), including English, Maths and a Science subject.
You should also meet the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons' fitness to practice guidance criteria.

You will be taught be expert staff with a thorough knowledge of the subject, many of whom may be qualified via the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeouns.
Guest lecturers may also deliver sessions in their particular area of interest or speciality.
The course is made up of 6 online multiple-choice question examinations, 3 assignments, a portfolio of evidence and a summative Licence to ractise objective structured clinical examination.
Learners must have a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English, Maths and a Science subject to register on this programme.
You must already have a position as a student veterinary in an approved training practice as either an apprentice or employee before applying for this course. This will cover any placement requirements.
This qualification will provide you with the practical competence and the underpinning knowledge required to join the Roya College of Veterinary Surgeons register of veterinary nurses as a fully qualified veterinary nurse.
You will study 240 credits over a 24 month programme and undertake the following units:
- Professional Veterinary Nursing Responsibilities
- Diagnostic Principles
- Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 1
- Pharmacology and Dispensary Management
- Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills and Professional Behaviours
- Anaesthesia and Theatre Nursing Skills
- Life Stage and Medical Nursing Care and Support
- Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 2
- Surgical Nursing and Patient Care
On completion of this course, you could progess to Higher Education, either with us or at university. This could include Level 5 subjects such as Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Emergency and Critical Care), Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse),Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Medical), or Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Surgical).
You will also be qualified to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
