Planning to work for his dad selling “bolts and screws” Joey found his passion for Sports Coaching at Northumberland College. His now a full-time football coach at Sunderland AFC’s Foundation of Light and runs his own business.
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity.
I had just left school and saw a promotion about the course so my friends and I came along to find out more.
I chose to study at Northumberland College because I the course sounded great. The tutors were excellent and made it impossible to say no.
Learning a vary of different things across sport. Different topics which I still use in my working day as a sports coach.
The belief they showed in me. George (Bramley, Public Services & Sport lecturer) helped me discover what I want to do through the Sports Coaching modules. He gave me opportunities to fulfil my potential and was constantly giving feedback and advice.
A great learning environment which allows you to make mistakes. The support they offer every student no matter their background is unbelievable.
I competed in leagues and competitions with the football team. I also took part in team building exercises like rock climbing and volunteering at the School Games with Active Northumberland as well as trips to local universities.
The support, encouragement, dedication, commitment from the tutors to making us better learners and people!
Too much to say! One example is: having a catch up with my tutor early on in my time at the college and him asking what I wanted to do when I left. I didn’t really know, so I just said I will go work for my dad who sells screws and bolts.
The best thing is looking back at this now George knew this wasn’t really for me and throughout the year worked with me and made me find a spark and love for sports coaching.
From this I now work full time coaching, run three grassroots teams and am highly qualified in the game of football. I get asked to write case studies at work about the the positive affect we have on out students/players and this has made me realize how much George and Northumberland College has changed my life.
Excuses will always be there for you, opportunities will not.
Life-changing support.
I would 100% recommend Northumberland College.
I am a full time football coach at Foundation of Light, Sunderland AFC’s official charity, as well as running three grassroots teams and Direct Sports Coaching, which is my own business, .
I am now in full time employment with ambitions to continue to grow.
It is a great college with excellent staff.
