Northumberland College is celebrating a major milestone in the development of its transformational new Ashington Campus, with the academic ‘Heart of the Campus’ building now officially wind and weathertight.
The milestone marks significant progress in the delivery of the trailblazing new campus, which will provide state-of-the-art learning environments, specialist facilities and inclusive spaces designed to meet the needs of learners, employers and the wider community across Northumberland.
Built using innovative technologies and sustainable modern methods of construction, much of the ‘Heart of the Campus’ has been manufactured off-site before assembly in Ashington, such as precast elements including concrete floor planks, staircases and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS) for walls and roofs.
Once complete, the building will house a wide range of curriculum areas including education and childcare; business; visitor economy and commercial industries; sport, exercise and wellbeing; and computing and technology; alongside English, Maths and ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) provision and a specialist hub for young people and adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The ‘Heart of the Campus’ will also feature commercial facilities open to the public and local businesses, helping to create stronger links between education, industry and the local economy.
Judith Quinn, Ashington Campus Principal, said: “Reaching this milestone is a hugely significant moment for everyone involved in the new Ashington Wansbeck Campus project.
“The facilities being created here will provide exceptional opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to develop the skills, confidence and experiences needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
“We are particularly proud that the campus has been designed with inclusivity, sustainability and wellbeing at its heart, creating an inspiring environment that will support learners for generations to come.”
The new Ashington Campus is part of a new generation of Government-led educational buildings being developed by the Department for Education, supporting future skills, driving regeneration and creating new opportunities for learners and communities across Northumberland.
